An Irish Gaelic man could use two different kinds of bynames (surnames) in his name. The kind created by this generator — a patronymic byname — indicated who his father was, usually by his given name, that is, his first name. A patronymic byname did not say anything at all about what clan he belonged to! Any name generated below could be the name of a member of the O'Donnel clan, the O'Boyle clan, the Maguire clan, or any other Irish Gaelic clan of the era. To create an Irish Gaelic name for a man using a patronymic byname, select a given name (first name) for him from the pop up list on the left and a given name (first name) for his father from the pop up list on the right, below.
